Training Stick
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "Long Arm" training stick, from The Stick Lady at The Path Natural Horsemanship program, is one of the most useful training tools you can own. Used correctly, it is an extension of your arm...NOT a whip. It is especially effective to keep distance and maintain your 'personal bubble' when you first start working with a new horse, especially one that may have fear or aggression issues. By attaching a 6ft long, 1/4" diameter progress string or savvy string to the leather tip, you add another tool that is extremely useful for touching around the body, the legs and feet and further desensitizing or cueing the horse. It is meant to be used as a quality, comparable alternative to a carrot stick, handy stick or horse flag, but with our Long Arm, you get color choices, free personalization and a very reasonable price!
The Long Arm is made from High Quality solid 3/8" fiberglass rod with a golf club grip and handcrafted leather tip for attaching progress string / pocket rope. This stick is strong, balanced and well-made. The leather tip is hand cut, sewn and whip-wrapped onto the stick. The grip is a quality golf club grip, not just a foam sleeve and is properly mounted on the stick. Mine have been stomped, run over, 'stolen' and chewed-on by the horses and they come away with hardly a scratch, other than occasionally needing to replace a chewed-up leather tip if I didn't rescue it quick enough [grin]! This fiberglass stick WILL stand up to long term, heavy usage and treatment, unlike those made of wood or brittle plastic (both of which can be dangerous if they crack, splinter or break, possibly causing injury to the horse).
SHORT STICKS: I also make a shorter, 3ft version for kids or adults to use with miniatures, small donkeys or ponies. The short stick is NOT meant to be used with full size horses for groundwork, unless the handler / horse is much further along in their training program. The purpose is to have an appropriate reach with the stick, which will keep you out of kicking/striking distance. If your stick is not longer than the horse's leg, you won't have enough reach to stay a safe distance away.
.. Another use for the 3ft stick though, is for 'focus' riding. It is lighter than the standard stick and on most sized horses, is long enough to get proper reach to front or rear to do the stick focus riding tasks, without having to carry and handle the 4ft standard sticks. Your order can be filled with a short stick, if you wish. If you want the short stick combo instead, just put a note in with your payment or email me.
Progress String
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My progress string is another of the most handy training tools you can own! It is professionally spliced, affordable and high quality. They are professionally marlinspike spliced on BOTH ends which gives them the proper weight and feel. I offer them in the standard 6ft length and also in a 4ft length to be used with my shorter training sticks. The white w/blue tracer and black w/blue tracer strings are made from the same Samson Stable Braid rope as savvy strings and the others are comparable high-quality double braid ropes from New England Rope, Wellington Rope or Yale Cordage, or similar manufacturer.
It is extremely useful for touching around the body, the legs and feet and further desensitizing or cueing the horse, can be used as a neck rope for riding, a leash for your dog, a quick rope for securing items to your saddle, and so on. It is a quality, comparable alternative to a savvy string or pocket rope, but with our string you get free personalization, a one year unconditional guarantee and a very reasonable price!
I offer the strings in the standard 6ft length (for standard 4ft training stick) and also in a 4ft length to be used with the shorter 3ft training sticks
NOTE: If you order a short stick with a string, a short string will automatically be sent, unless you specify otherwise.
